BANNER ELK, N.C. - Union College's Zach Winn captured the National Collegiate Cycling Association Men's Division II Omnium National Championship Sunday. Union also placed fifth in the team standings.

Winn, a sophomore from Port Hope, Canada, became the first male rider in Union history to win the omnium crown. He is the sixth Union rider to earn an individual national championship. He scored a total of 392 points, 91 better than Matthew Williams from Warren-Wilson (N.C.) College.

He started the weekend with a second-place ride in the cross country race Friday. Another second-place ride came Saturday morning during the short track event. Later Saturday, a 26th-place finish was posted by Winn in the downhill race. In Sunday's dual slalom, Winn was 10th.

"I am very proud of Zach and all he accomplished this season," Union head coach Chuck Coffey said.

It was six years ago when Amanda McKay won the women's omnium title, the first for a Union cyclist and she added the cross country championship a year later.

Greg Gibson (Salt Lake City, Utah) was third in the omnium standings as well for Union. This marks the second straight year he was a NCCA All-American. Brad Nelson (Carmel, Ind.), German (Nano) Bermudez (Louisville, Ky.) and Jonathan Turner (Harlan, Ky.) all finished eighth to tenth, respectively.

Union fell 95 points short of the NCCA Division II National Title, with 490 points. Appalachian State (N.C.) University won the championship with 585 points, ten more than the Colorado School of Mines. Warren-Wilson finished third with Brevard (N.C.) College.

In talking about the weekend, Coffey bragged about Union's cross country and short track performances.

On the women's side, Union's Rachel Millsop (Springdale, Ark.) placed fourth in the omnium standings. She came in as the MidWest Collegiate Cycling Conference Rider of the Year. Her best finishes of the weekend were a pair of fourths, in the cross country and short track. In the dual slalom, the sophomore finished fifth.

Sarah Seitz (Lexington, Ky.) just missed a Top-10 omnium finish by seven points.
