JACKSON, Miss. - Union College nearly pulled out an impressive win, but Evangel (Mo.) University was able to register the 3-2 victory Saturday in the Belhaven (Miss.) College Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 3-5 overall after going 2-2 in the tournament.

Union won the opener 30-19 but dropped the next two frames 30-27 and 30-16 as Evangel took a 2-1 lead. The Lady Bulldogs won the fourth set 30-28; however, Evangel wrapped the victory with a 15-11 decision in the finale.

Freshman Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) tied a school record with 34 digs. In addition, she posted her third 40-assist match of the season and second of the weekend as she had 44 assists to go with her six blocks.

Tracie Phillips (Bowling Green, Ky.) had her second 30-dig outing of the weekend as she had 31. Stephanie Pateman (Weyburn, Sask.) led Union with 20 kills with Marlee Cooper (Bloomington, Ill.) chipped in 12 kills and six blocks. Deena O'Hare (Perry, Canada) had 12 kills, and Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.) drove home 10 kills.

Suzannah Behnken (Tempe, Ariz.) helped out with 11 digs.

Union returns to action on Thursday when it takes on Milligan (Tenn.) College in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
