BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Four Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures as No. 20 Union College cruised to a 98-57 victory over Midway (Ky.) College Friday in the Union College Lady Bulldog Classic.

Union improved to 1-1 overall, while Midway is now 0-1. In the first game of the Classic, Ohio Dominican University defeated Tennessee Wesleyan College 61-57. Saturday, Union will face Ohio Dominican at 6 p.m. with Midway and Tennessee Wesleyan squaring off at 4 p.m.

Senior Susanna Todd (Eubank, Ky.) paced Union with 19 points, while Brooke Smith (Pineville, Ky.) posted 13 points and five rebounds. Cassandra Lawson (Lexington, Ky.) came off the bench to provide 12 points with Carley Blankenship (Lexington, Ky.) chipping in 11.

A 21-0 run early in the first propelled Union to a 27-7 lead with 11:58 left in the half. The Lady Bulldogs led by as much as 28 in the opening period as they took a 54-26 cushion into the break.

Union opened the second half on a 22-5 run to break open a 78-33 advantage at the 11:09 mark. From that point on, Midway never got any closer than 37 points the rest of the way.

The Lady Bulldogs won the battle on the boards with a 35-33 eged, but Midway's Jackie Hicks led everyone with 11 rebounds.

Turnovers plagued Midway as it committed 42 miscues, resulting in 47 points for Union. The Lady Bulldogs had 23 turnovers, but Midway only cashed them in for eight points.

Ohio Dominican 61, Tennessee Wesleyan 57
On the strength of a balanced scoring attack, Ohio Dominican University held off Tennessee Wesleyan College 61-57 Friday at the Union College Lady Bulldog Classic in Barbourville, Ky.

Amanda Ritzler paced Ohio Dominican (1-0 overall) with 13 points, while Abby Glover came off the bench to pour in 11. Two others had nine points.

Tennessee Wesleyan boasted a 15-8 lead midway through the first half, but an 11-2 rally gave Ohio Dominican a 19-17 edge with 8:05 remaining. ODU led by as much as nine en route to a 34-26 halftime lead.

A Ritzler 3-pointer gave Ohio Dominican a 50-40 lead with 10:29 to play, but Tennessee Wesleyan fought back and cut the margin to 57-56 following back-to-back buckets from Casha Foster at the 1:24 mark. ODU, though accounted for four of the final five points as it sealed the 61-57 decision.

Foster and Rachel Sitzler netted 13 points to lead Tennessee Wesleyan (1-1 overall), while Mindy Cox-Hodge chipped in 10.

Lady Bulldog Notes

  • Jessica Baker (Canmer, Ky.) recorded a career-high six steals. Union had 26 as a team. The highest the Lady Bulldogs had last season was 20.
  • Brooke Smith now ranks third on the all-time scoring list with 1,392 career points, surpassing Michelle Lewallen, who had 1,385.
  • Union was 6-0 last season when scoring 90 or more points. The 41-point victory almost topped the Lady Bulldogs' largest margin of victory from a year ago. Union defeated Bluefield (Va.) College by 42 (109-67 on Jan. 9, 2008.
  • Susanna Todd now has 1,090 career points, moving her into 10th on the all-time list, slipping past Chasity Nunn who had 1,089 points.
  • The Lady Bulldogs extended their home winning streak to 14 games.
