BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College fell behind in an extended fifth set, however the Lady Bulldogs were able to recover for a 3-2 win over Asbury (Ky.) College Tuesday.  

Union went to 21-10 on the season and 3-2 in five-set matches. The Lady Bulldogs extended their home winning streak to seven matches as well. Asbury, the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season champions moved to 24-16.

With the win, the senior trio of Stephanie Pateman (Weyburn, Canada), Marlee Cooper (Bloomington, Ill.) and Suzannah Behnken (Tempe, Ariz.) broke the program record for wins in a four-year span with 87 during their career.

The fifth set saw Union trail early, but the Lady Bulldogs captured a 25-23 win. The opening set went to Asbury, 25-23. Union took the next two with scores of 25-15 and 25-22. Asbury won the fourth set 25-22 to force a fifth set.

Pateman and Cooper led the attack with 19 and 16 kills, respectively. Pateman now has five matches with 15 or more kills and the 16 kills for Cooper are a season high.

Behnken was credited with nine digs.

Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) recorded a career-best 62 assists with 16 digs.

Autumn Combs (Florence, Ky.) contributed 12 kills as well. Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.) recorded 11 kills and 10 digs.

Meg Donnelly (Middletown, Ohio) and Christina Prindle (Florence, Ky.) contributed 16 and 14 digs, respectively.

Union starts the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Friday with a 1 p.m. quarter-final contest. The Lady Bulldogs, the tournament's third seed, plays sixth-seeded Covenant (Ga.) College. In the two regular-season meetings, Union won both, with scores of 3-1 at Covenant and a 3-0 home sweep.

  • When losing the first set of a match, Union has gone on to a 2-8 record in 2008 in the matches.
  • Union ended the season with a 9-4 record inside Robsion Arena.
  • The Lady Bulldogs' winning streak over Asbury moved to four matches, dating back to 2006.
  • Moreland's previous career-best 59 assist came last season.
  • The previous record of 86 wins in a four year period occurred from 1992 to 1995 (86-69).
