KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Union College advanced to the Appalachian Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament winners' bracket final Friday, but dropped a 3-1 match to King (Tenn.) College, the regular-season champions in MeadowView Convention Center.

No. 3 seed Union took the first set 25-22. King, the regular-season champs and top seed took the next two sets with scores of 25-18 in both. King finished the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth.

Union moved into the losers' bracket final scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs, now with a 22-11 record, will play the winner between Bryan (Tenn.) College and Montreat (N.C.) College. The two play at 9 a.m. King reserved a spot in the AAC Championship match at 2 p.m.

Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.) recorded a team-high 12 kills in the contest. Stephanie Pateman (Weyburn, Canada) added 10 kills. Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) was credited with 37 assists and 12 digs. It was her 17th double-double of the season.

Christina Prindle (Florence, Ky.) posted a team-best 16 digs and served an ace. Meg Donnelly (Middletown, Ohio) served three aces.

Union snapped a seven-match losing streak to Bryan (Tenn.) College Friday in a semifinal contest during the afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs won a 3-1 match over Bryan, the No. 2 seed, to snap a seven-match losing streak to Bryan. Union rallied after trailing early however Bryan took the opening set 26-24. The Lady Bulldogs gained control with wins of 25-21 in the second and 25-12 in the third. Union used another score of 25-21 for the match-clinching win in the fourth set.

Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.) provided 10 kills with a team-high 18 digs and three total blocks. The double-double was the 13th of the year for the junior.

Marlee Cooper (Bloomington, Ill.) led the offense with 16 kills and it ties her season high. Pateman added 12 kills.

Moreland posted 44 assists for her fourth 40-plus assist match of the season. Prindle served two aces with her 17 digs.

Union defeated Covenant (Ga.) College in a quarterfinal contest to start action. The Lady Bulldogs took a 25-11 victory in the first set and followed with a 25-8 second-set win. A 25-16 closed the match for Union and it was the 14th 3-0 sweep of the year.

Cooper and Vinovich both recorded eight kills to lead Union. Vinovich also served two aces, one off her career high. Moreland was credited with 25 assists and led the team with seven digs.

Lady Bulldog Notes

  • Union has won the first set 23 times this season and the Lady Bulldogs now have a record of 20-3 in the matches.
  • In post-season play, Union is now 2-0 against Covenant. The first win came in the 2003 AAC Tournament.
  • Since joining the AAC in 2002, Union has an overall record of 10-10 against Bryan.
  • The Lady Bulldogs have a record of 3-8 in matches this year where the Lady Bulldogs lose the first set.
  • In four-set matches during 2008, Union owns a 6-7 record in such contests.
  • Union has not beat King in post-season play, with a 0-6 record.
