LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Union College return specialist Chris Thomas is the Mid-South Conference East Defensive Freshman of the Year while a total of eight Bulldogs were named to the All-MSC East Team, the league announced Wednesday.

The honors were voted on by the MSC coaches.

No. 11 Union had five players named to the MSC East All-Conference Defensive Team and three to the Offensive squad.

Joining Thomas (Hopkinsville, Ky.) on the defensive team are senior Patrick Burke (Erlanger, Ky.), senior Marekus Smith (Lithonia, Ga.), senior Willie Williams (Miami, Fla.) and junior Ty Harris (Monroe, Ga.). Making the offensive team are senior Kyle Callahan (Covington, Ky.), junior Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) and sophomore Quintin Borders (Lexington, Ky.).

For Pollock and Harris, this marks the third year in a row they have made the All-MSC East First Team while it is the second year in a row for Borders and Callahan. Pollock and Harris join Pete Greene, J.T. Pennington and Patrick O'Neal as the only players in program history to be named to the First Team three times. Pennington is the only player to have make the First Team four times.

The eight First Team All-Conference members are the most in program history, and it is the second time Union has had eight First Team honorees with the last time coming in 1993.

Thomas averaged 23.1 yards per kickoff return with a long of 46 yards and 9.4 yards per punt return with a long of 77 yards. He also returned a punt for a touchdown. In addition to his return numbers, Thomas caught 34 passes for 432 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 36 yards and a score on six carries.

Burke, a defensive lineman, ranks fourth on the team in tackles with 41 total stops with 3.5 going for a loss of 19 yards and two sacks. He also has three quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. His top game of the season was a 10-tackle performance at Shorter (Ga.) College on Oct. 23.

Smith, a linebacker, has amassed 88 total tackles, 15 tackles for a loss of 50 yards and four sacks, all of which rank second on the team. In addition, he has two interceptions, seven pass breakups and quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles and three blocked kicks. Earlier in the season, he was named the MSC Defensive Player of the Week after an eight-tackle, one-sack performance against Georgetown (Ky.) College on Sept. 27.

Williams, a linebacker, has recorded a school-record 144 total tackles to go along with his 19.5 tackles for a loss and 11.5 sacks. He has forced and recovered four fumbles, returning one 40 yards for a touchdown. Williams also has 14 quarterback hurries, three pass breakups and a blocked kick to his credit. He set the single-game record for tackles with 22 at Shorter and was named the NAIA and MSC Defensive Player of the Week following a 13-tackle performance at Lambuth (Tenn.) University on Sept. 6.

Harris, a defensive back, has made 30 total tackles this season with one going for a loss of 2 yards. In addition, he has two interceptions and ranks fifth all-time with nine career picks. Harris has broken up eight passes and forced one fumble.

Callahan, a wide receiver, set the single-season and career records for most touchdown receptions as he has 13 this season and 23 for his career. He has caught 44 passes for 592 yards in 2008 and ranks fourth all-time with 120 receptions. His 1,681 receiving yards rank second in program history. He as named the MSC Offensive Player of the Year after he hauled in nine catches for 136 yards and two scores in a 31-24 win over Campbellsville (Ky.) University on Nov. 8.

Pollock, a running back, set the single-season rushing record as he galloped 1,235 yards on 214 carries. He scored 11 rushing touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 82 yards and another score. Pollock had six 100-yard games this season, including the last three games in a row. He was twice named the MSC Offensive Player of the Week.

Borders has been an anchor on the Bulldog offensive line at left tackle. He has started all 11 games and helped Union gain 1,628 yards on the ground and 2,522 through the air. Against Faulkner (Ala.) University, he and the rest of the offensive line led way as Union gained 517 yards in total offense and 334 yards rushing.

University of Virginia's College at Wise senior quarterback Randy Hippeard is the East Division's Offensive Player of the Year and University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) senior linebacker Travis Thurmond is the East Division's Defensive Player of the Year.

Hippeard led the NAIA in total offense averaging 339.9 yards per game. He passed for 38 touchdowns and connected on more than 61 percent of his passes during the regular season. Hippeard is a three-time MSC Player of the Week and was selected as the NAIA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15 after throwing for 324 yards -- on 18-of-18 passing -- and five touchdowns in a win over Newport News Apprentice.

Thurmond amassed 97 tackles and 2-1/2 sacks this season. He recorded a season-high 14 tackles against Cumberland University on Sept. 27 and 13 tackles in a regular season finale against Virginia-Wise.

Cumberlands' Maurice Berryhill is the MSC East Division Offensive Freshman of the Year.

Cumberlands' Ronnie Bowling was named the MSC Champion of Character recipients.

Cumberland's John Bland was voted MSC East Coach of the Year as voted on by his peers. Bland led the Patriots to a 9-1 record and won the East Division with a perfect 6-0 record.

Union is 9-2 overall and went 5-1 in MSC East play. The Bulldogs will play at No. 3 University of Saint Francis (Ind.) Saturday in the first round of the NAIA Football Championship Series at 12 p.m.
