FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. - After getting off to a rocky start, Union College rallied late to put itself in 31st place out of 36 squads at the National Team Match Games.
After the first game, the Bulldogs found themselves in 35th. Union hovered near the bottom of the standings, and entering the sixth and final game of the day, Union was in 34th place. However, a strong final game bumped the Bulldogs up three spot into 31st.
Union finished the day with a pinfall of 5,458. Witchita State (Kan.) is in first at 7,018, while Newman (Kan.) is second at 6,971. Morehead State (Ky.) knocked down 6,958 pins for third, and Pikeville (Ky.) and Lindenwood (Mo.) round out the top five with scores of 6,881 and 6,760, respectively.
Individually, Union was led by Mark Baker (Lexington, Ky.) and Andrea Higgins (Hendersonville, Ky.). Baker bowled all six games, tallying a total pinfal of 1,077 and had a single-game high of 209. Meanwhile, Higgins bowled five games and had a pinfall of 951 for an average of 190.2. She had a high game of 218.
Justin Ward (Lexington, Ky.) posted a pinfall of 909 in five games, and Chad Ferguson (Louisville, Ky.) knocked down 867 pins in five games. Jordan Rummel (Athens, Tenn.) chipped in a score of 659 over four games.
Play will resume Saturday with 16 Baker games.
