BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Karla Goncalves, a member of the Union College women's soccer team, was named to the 2008 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes team, the organization announced Friday.

Goncalves, the senior defender from Sao Paulo, Brazil started in all 19 of Union's matches in 2008. She provided an assist against Montreat (N.C.) College, Cumberland (Tenn.) University and Tennessee Temple University for her three points during the season. Goncalves finished her career with six goals and 24 points.

She was also an Appalachian Athletic Conference All-Academic team selection for the last three seasons. This is the first time Goncalves has been on the Daktronics-NAIA Women's Soccer Scholar-Athletes team and the first Lady Bulldog since 2005. In Union's program history, nine different players have been honored 10 times.

Trinity International (Ill.) University had the most individual awards with eight on the list. In all, the AAC was represented by 11 players from five different teams.

In order to be a recipient of the NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete award, one must fulfill these requirements: the recipient must be a junior or above in academic standing; has been in attendance at the nominating institution a minimum of one full year of attendance; has a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale) at the time of nomination at the nominating institution; has been certified as eligible.

Union finished the season with a 14-5 record which included a program-record 14 wins during the regular season.
