SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Union College rallied Sunday to finish 36th at the Blue & Gold Classic in South Bend, Ind., while Chad Ferguson recorded one of the Bulldogs' best performances of the season.
Heading into Sunday's action, Union was mired in 42nd place. But the Bulldogs put together some of their best frames of the year to jump six spots to end the Classic 36th out of 63 teams.
"Each weekend, it seems I keep saying this, but this was the biggest tournament that we've been in all season," said Union head coach Matt Mahony. "I am very proud of our team and how they put together such a strong performance Sunday."
Union tallied a total pinfall of 8,180 to finish 36th. Wichita State (Kan.) won the event with a pinfall of 9,642 with Calumet (Ind.) coming in second at 9,320. McKendree (Ill.), Purdue (Ind.) and Central Florida rounded out the Top 5.
Ferguson (Louisville, Ky.) placed 15th individually in a field of over 400 bowlers. The freshman had a total pinfall of 1,907 in nine games for an average of 211.9.
"Chad had an incredible weekend," Mahony said. "He has been bowling well for us, and this weekend, everything just seemed to come together for him."
Jesse Beal (Dayton, Ohio) had the team's best individual game as he rolled six strikes in a row to start the game and added three more strikes to finish with a 266. He finished with a total pinfall of 1,700 in nine games, placing 73rd overall with a 188.8 average.
Mark Baker (Lexington, Ky.) placed 115th overall individually with a 179.3 average. Jordan Rummel (Athens, Tenn.) averaged 209.8 pins per game with a pinfall of 1,049 in five games, while Jeremie Blattler (Savannah, Tenn.) averaged 159 per game (795 pins in five games).
Kayleen Hiatt (Kettering, Ohio) posted a 171.4 average (857 pins in five games), while Haley McDowell (Lexington, Ky.) tallied 258 pins in two games.
Union returns to action Feb. 7-8 at the McKendree Baker Challenge in Fairview Heights, Ill.
