BRISTOL, Tenn. - Union College junior Brooke Smith added more hardware to her trophy case Wednesday as she was named the 2008-09 Appalachian Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year.

The honor is the second in a row for Smith (Pineville, Ky.).

Smith headlined the All-Appalachian Athletic Conference First Team with Heather Mandela of Milligan (Tenn.) College, Liz Martin of Covenant (Ga.) College, Katie Davis of Bryan (Tenn.) College and Chazaree Wright of Montreat (N.C.) College joining her.

The Lady Bulldogs had two players make the All-AAC Third Team in senior Susanna Todd (Eubank, Ky.) and junior Ashley Lunsford (Orlando, Ky.).

Smith was second in the league in scoring with a 21.8 points-per-game average and fifth in rebounding at 7.97 per outing. In addition, she ranked second in blocks at 1.67 per game.

On Feb. 21, Smith became the second player in program history to score 2,000 points in a career. She ranks second all-time in scoring with 2,012 points and third all-time in rebounding with 710.

During the season, Smith led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring 22 times and in rebounding 18 times and recorded eight double-doubles, including four in a row. She also scored 20 or more points 18 times and over 30 points five times. Smith posted a season-high 43 points in a 79-76 win at Montreat on Feb. 18.

Todd, who was named to the All-AAC Third Team in 2007-08, has averaged 9.21 points per game and leads NAIA Division II in 3-point field-goal percentage at 50.0 (66-of-132 shots). Todd is the Lady Bulldogs' all-time 3-point shooter as she owns the single-game (8), season (73) and career records (268) for 3-pointers made.

Lunsford is averaging 9.57 points and 6.33 rebounds per game. Twelve times this season she has led the team in rebounds and posted five double-doubles. This marks the first time she has earned a spot on the All-AAC Team.

Smith was also named to the Academic All-Conference Team along with Jessica Baker (Canmer, Ky.) and Carrie Bistline (Frankfort, Ky.). The honor is the third one for Bistline, second for Smith and first for Baker.

Union (20-10 overall, 12-6 AAC) is the No. 4 seed in the AAC Tournament and will face No. 5 Covenant Thursday at 10:15 a.m. The tournament is being held at King (Tenn.) College in Bristol, Tenn.
