JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Union College's Johnnie Nabors made history Saturday as the senior captured the 60-meter dash NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championship.

Nabors (Lawrenceville, Ga.) won with a 6.80 second run, a hundredth of a second better than Jamal Forbes of Dickinson State (N.D.) University. The championship is the first individual champion for the Union track program. Nabors improved on his back-to-back third place finishes the last two seasons in the event.

"Last night, all I could do is think about this," Nabors said. "This is my third year here and the past two years, I've finished third place. I couldn't leave Johnson City knowing I came in third-place again. It was really emotional."

DeMorrio Leggett (Bardstown, Ky.) earned All-American status as well thanks to a triple jump of 46 feet and nine inches. The freshman's leap was good enough for sixth. Lindenwood (Mo.) University's Illiyan Chamov took the championship home thanks to a 50 feet and 7.5 inch leap.

Union collected 11 points in the team standings which was good enough for a tie in 19th place. At last year's championship the Bulldogs were tied for 24th. Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University took the team title home with 78.5 points. Dickinson State was second with 55.
