BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College volleyball team went into the community recently and took the sport into near-by Jesse D. Lay Elementary School to demonstrate the skills associated with volleyball to the children.

The scrimmage featured a dozen of Union's players and was a culminating event for Lay Elementary School physical education teacher Mark Johnson's unit that covered volleyball. He taught the students various skills associated with volleyball and this was the first opportunity some of the students had saw volleyball other than playing in the backyard.

"We welcome the opportunities for outreach and community service in the local areas," Union head coach Whitney Erb commented. "I think my players enjoyed it just as much as the elementary kids. Hopefully today we made 500 little fans that we will keep lasting relationships with."

The students, from kindergarten to sixth grade, made the gymnasium a loud environment that provided an exciting atmosphere for the game.

"It's important tous at Union to developed relationships within our community through the athletic programs," Erb added.

Lay principal Jeff Frost added that he appreciated Erb and the team's willingness to come to Lay.

Union finished the 2008 season as the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament runner up after a third-place finish in the regular-season standings. The Lady Bulldogs compiled a 25-12 record during the season.
