LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - No. 10 Union College wrapped up the top seed of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Men's Tennis tournament thanks to a 7-2 victory at Covenant (Ga.) College Wednesday.
This makes the third straight season in which the Bulldogs have owned the AAC regular season title. To clinch the regular-season championship outright, the Bulldogs need to defeat Milligan (Tenn.) College April 16.
The win improved Union's record to 11-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Union head coach Renzo Lopez also picked up his 75th win while leading the Bulldogs' squad.
Union's winning streak against conference foes stretched to 22 matches as well.
Anthony Hill (Guayaquil, Ecuador) dropped his first conference match of the season in No. 1 singles' play. He dropped a 7-6, 6-4 match to Josh Jeremiah. The defeat was also his first loss in singles' play in 2009.
Union went on to win the other five singles' points in straight sets.
Alvaro Vargas (Manizales, Columbia) only lost one game in his contest at No. 5 singles. The freshman improved to 11-0 as a singles' player.
For only the second time this season Union lost a contested doubles' contest, the No. 3 doubles' point. The point needed a tie breaker for Covenant. Union owns a 28-2 record in doubles' contest in 2009. Both losses have been in No. 3 matches.
Hill and Vargas teamed up to improve to 11-0 with a 8-3 No. 1 doubles' victory.
Covenant went to 9-6 overall with a conference record of 4-2.
Union will make the journey to No. 15 Shorter (Ga.) College for a 2 p.m. match Thursday.
