
ROME, Ga. - No. 10 Union College improved to 13-0 Saturday behind a 5-0 win over No. 13 Xavier (La.) University in a match played at Berry (Ga.) College's Walt Attaway Tennis Complex.
The 13 wins to start the season matches the modern era record that the 2006 sqaud established. Xavier went to 13-6 behind a two-match losing streak for the first time this season.
Alvaro Vargas (Manizales, Columbia) clinched the match thanks to his No. 5 singles' point won 6-3, 7-6 (10-8).
In Union's last four matches the Bulldogs have a 10-2 record in doubles' play including Saturday's sweep of the points. Overall in 2009 Union owns a 33-3 doubles' record including a 26-0 in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles' contests.
When the match was called after Vargas' win Union led one more singles' match and the other three were tied.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday at NCAA Division II foe Carson-Newman (Tenn.) College. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
