BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College will face a familiar foe in the opening round of the 2009 Appalachian Athletic Conference Softball Tournament when play gets underway Tuesday in Kingsport, Tenn. The Lady Bulldogs and Virginia Intermont College play a 1 p.m. contest on the first day.
Union, the No. 5 seed, ended the conference regular season with a home split against Virginia Intermont, the No. 4 seed, April 18. Virginia Intermont won the opener 7-5 and Union rebounded for a 6-0 victory.
The Lady Bulldogs enter the AAC Tournament with an 8-8 conference record and an overall record of 22-23. Union owns a 7-1 record over Virginia Intermont in the last three seasons including two wins in postseason play. The last postseason meeting occurred a year ago with Union winning 5-2.
Virginia Intermont finished a game better in the AAC standings at 9-7 and the Lady Cobras own an 18-22 record overall.
The tournament starts with an 11 a.m. contest between eighth-seeded Covenant (Ga.) College and ninth-seeded Bluefield (Va.) College. The winner advances to play regular-season champion Milligan (Tenn.) College at 3 p.m.
The other half of the bracket features a 5 p.m. game featuring third-seeded UVa-Wise and Tennessee Wesleyan College, the sixth seed. The Tuesday nightcap at 7 p.m. is a battle of No. 2 seed Montreat (N.C.) College and No. 7 seed King (Tenn.) College.
Wednesday's slate features three losers' bracket games at 11 a.m. before the winners' bracket semifinals scheduled for 5 p.m. Three more losers' bracket games are featured Thursday with the winners' bracket final at 3 p.m. The tournament championship game is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. after the 11 a.m. losers' bracket final with an if-necessary game to follow.
To the winner of the tournament goes an automatic bid to the NAIA Softball Championship in Decatur, Ala. May 14-20.
