CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - No. 9 Union College secured a bid to the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship thanks to a 5-0 win over Tennessee Wesleyan College in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament championship Saturday.
The tournament championship was the third straight for the Bulldogs. Union also won the regular season title behind a 6-0 AAC record. In the last three AAC Tournaments, the Bulldogs have only lost two points in the six matches.
The victory improved Union's record to 16-0. Tennessee Wesleyan ended 2009 at 7-6.
The match was over when Rafael Millon (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won his No. 4 singles' match 6-2, 6-1 to give the Bulldogs their fifth point.
The sweep was the fourth straight for Union.
Thanks to the three doubles' points, the Bulldogs improved to 42-3 in doubles' play this season.
Over the last three seasons, Union has not lost to a conference foe, a 22-match span, which includes post-season play.
The first time Union and Tennessee Wesleyan met on March 20, Union won 9-0. This marked the second straight season Union had to beat Tennessee Wesleyan in the post season. In 2008 Union defeated Tennessee Wesleyan twice, once in the AAC Tournament and in the NAIA Region XII Championship.
