- A two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning sent Union College into
the losers' bracket of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Softball Tournament
Tuesday as the Lady Bulldogs suffered a 3-2 opening-round loss against Virginia
No. 5 seed Union moved to 22-24 on the season and will play ninth-seeded
Bluefield (Va.) College at 11 a.m. Wednesday. No. 4
seed Virginia Intermont improved to 19-22 and into a semifinal contest against
the No. 8 Covenant (Ga.)
College Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Haley Odle ended the game after her double into left center
and Kelli Porter coming around from first to score Virginia Intermont's third
Trailing 1-0 to start the fifth inning, Mallory Lavoy (Temperance, Mich.) hit a ground ball through the
right side which rolled to the fence resulting in a RBI double to tie the
contest. Sherry DeVault (Baltimore, Ohio) scored the game-tying run all the
way from first.
Lavoy ended the game going 2-for-2, the only Union player
with a multi-hit effort. She scored Union's second run after Sarah Driver (Hopkinsville, Ky.)
doubled in the top half of the seventh inning to tie the game at two apiece.
Virginia Intermont regained the advantage, 2-1, after
Heather Odle hit a home run over the left-field fence to start the sixth
Michelle Kidd placed a single into shallow left field with
two outs which allowed Mycah Arnold to come home from third in the fourth
inning. The RBI single gave Virginia Intermont the first lead of the game.
Arnold's single to start the inning was the first hit for the Lady Cobras.
Driver suffered the loss going 6.2 innings and allowing
three runs on five hits. The junior mixed in three strikeouts, walked three and
hit two Lady Cobra batters.
Kristen Dyer only recorded one out, however she picked up
the win in relief. Her one out was a strikeout.
In all five Virginia Intermont players recorded a hit.

Lavoy's multi-hit game was her seventh in 2009.
Union moved to 5-9 in one-run games this season. Six of the
defeats have been against conference foes.
