- Fifth-seeded Union College made a run, however the Lady Bulldogs were
defeated by third-seeded UVa-Wise 10-0 in the 2009 Appalachian Athletic
Conference Softball Tournament Championship Friday.
Union advanced to the championship game after defeating
Covenant (Ga.) College 1-0 in the losers' bracket final.
The 2009 season ended for Union at 27-25.
A nine-run opening inning made the difference for UVa-Wise (31-15 overall).
Only the first run was an earned run charged to Sarah Driver (Hopkinsville, Ky.). Driver recorded two outs and
allowed nine runs in all. She allowed six hits, walked three and struck out
(Hopkinsville, Ky.) collected Union's only hit coming in the fourth inning. She
went 2-for-4 in the Covenant contest as well.
UVa-Wise's Lauren Snead went five innings and struck out six
Bobbi Mihelarakis went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored
and two RBIs. Seven UVa-Wise starters had a hit.
A sacrifice fly from Bethany
Outland (Hopkinsville, Ky.) in Union's half of the fifth scored Mallory Lavoy (Temperance, Mich.) and
proved to be enough to defeat Covenant. Lavoy started the inning with a double
to left field.
(London, Ky.) went all seven innings and struck out five in her seventh shutout
this season. Covenant only connected for four hits. With the bat, she recorded
a career-high three hits including a double.
Two of Covenant's hits came from Kim Cuticchia. Covenant finished the year 18-19 overall.
