KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Lioney Henriquez drove in a game-high five RBIs Saturday as No. 14 Union College opened the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament with 14-4 victory over UVa-Wise.
With the victory, second-seeded Union improved to 41-9 overall with No. 7 seed UVa-Wise dropping to 22-23.
The Bulldogs will face Bluefield (Va.) College Monday at 7:30 p.m. The Cavaliers will play King (Tenn.) College Monday at 10 a.m.
The tournament is being held at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn.
Henriquez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to go along with his five batted in.
Union was able to score two runs without the benefit of a hit as Kenny Kysar (Corbin, Ky.) walked to lead the game off with Joe Grinstead (Bowling Green, Ky.) also walking. Kysar had stole third to put runners on the corners when Grinstead stole second. On the Grinstead stolen base, catcher Alan Stoupa's throw went into the outfield to allow Kysar to score and Grinstead to move over to third. Troy Sitton (Cobden, Ill.) added a sac fly to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.
In the second, Union put together a four-run, two-out rally to stretch the margin to 6-0. Henriquez capped the rally with a three-run home run to left field.
UVa-Wise scratched out two runs in the top of the third, but Union tacked on another run off a Kysar run-scoring single to make it 7-2.
The Bulldogs added a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth for an 11-2 lead.
In the sixth, the Cavaliers scored twice more to pull within 11-4. Union though scored twice in the ball of the inning thanks to an Henriquez two-run double.
Union wrapped the win in the seventh when Trey Wheeler (Hopkinsville, Ky.) bounced a single over the head of the UVa-Wise first baseman to score Josh Ehringer (Somerset, Ky.), making the final 14-4.
Ehringer finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He upped his conference-leading average up to .447 and matched his career high for RBIs in a season as he now has 60.
Grinstead went 0-for-1 with two runs scored, but he tied the school record for walks in a game with four. Sitton was 1-fo-3 at the plate with two RBIs.
Chaz Bargo (Artemus, Ky.) recorded his fifth complete game of the season as he allowed four earned runs on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts, improving his record to a team-best 10-1.
