
MOBILE, Ala. - No. 10 Union College advanced to the second round of the 2009 NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship after coming from behind to win 6-3 against Ohio Dominican University Tuesday.
The win sends Union into a Wednesday contest against No. 7 Savannah (Ga.) College of Art and Design scheduled to start at 10 a.m. SCAD enters the tournament with an overall record of 8-5 after losing in the Sun Conference tournament to Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University.
Union fell behind after dropping two doubles' contests. The only point for the Bulldogs came in No. 1 when Anthony Hill (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Alvaro Vargas (Manizales, Columbia) won 8-0. The duo improved to 17-0 when playing together. Ohio Dominican won the other two doubles' matches 9-7 and 9-8 (7-3).
In singles' play Union answered with five points and all five came in straight sets.
The Bulldogs remain undefeated at 17-0 this season and the 17 wins rank as the third most victories in the modern era. The opening round win is the third straight season Union has advanced to the Round of 16 at the national championship. The Bulldogs will look to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time Wednesday.
Ohio Dominican's season ends at 12-9 after appearing in the program's first national championship.
