EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - A school-record run was not enough for Johnnie Nabors in the 2009 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field 100-meter dash finals Friday at the University of Southern Illinois Edwardsville. However, his run was good enough to earn All-American honors.

Nabors, a senior from Lawrenceville, Ga., posted a time of 10.54 seconds in the finals to finish third and to gain All-American status. This is the second straight year he was an All-American in the event. Last season he established the school record of 10.55 seconds to finish fifth.

The champion was Tyrell Cuffy from fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference squad King (Tenn.) College as he defended his title by running 10.41 seconds. King also had the second-place finisher in Kemar Hyman at 10.52.

Nabors qualified for the finals earlier Friday after finishing second in his semifinal heat in 10.58 seconds.

Union's 1,600 relay team finished seventh in the opening heat thanks to a time of three minutes and 16.20. The run was also a school record for the group. Scotty Barnes (Ewing, Va.) ran the opening leg before Nabors and Johnny Barnes (Stone Mountain, Ga.) were the next two runners before Andre Thornton (Loganville, Ga.) finished the race. The time was 15th overall.

Thornton completed the 400 in 48.66 seconds, however he finished 13th and missed the finals. Defending champion and Dickinson State (N.D.) University runner Ramon Miller ran the lap in 45.97 seconds to own the fastest mark.

The Bulldogs' 400 relay team was disqualified for a rules infraction during the race. The first handoff went too far past the exchange zone.

Saturday's schedule for Union features the triple jump finals as freshman DeMorrio Leggett (Bardstown, Ky.) will look to repeat an All-American performance from the indoor championship. Action in the triple jump gets underway at 1:30 p.m.

Nabors will have the 200 semifinals at 3:30 p.m. followed by the finals at 5 p.m.

After the second day of action, Union has six points which puts the Bulldogs in a tie for 20th. Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University has 45 entering Saturday's action.
