KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Union College placed two players on the 2009 NAIA Baseball All-American Team as seniors Joe Grinstead and Josh Ehringer made the squad as honorable mentions, the NAIA announced Thursday.
This marks the second year in a row Grinstead (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Ehringer (Somerset, Ky.) received this honor, making them the third and fourth players in program history to do so. They join Pat Leadingham (honorable mention in 1993 and 1994) and Tim Moore (honorable mention in 2000 and 2001) as the only players in Bulldog history to make the NAIA All-American Team multiple times.
Grinstead, who played second base this season after serving as the shortstop in 2008, lead the team with a .434 batting average with seven home runs and 58 RBIs. He also had 12 doubles, four triples, 66 runs scored and 32 stolen bases.
His .434 batting average is the second best in program history. Grinstead hit .433 in 2008 for the third-best, single-season batting average. He is tied with Chris Beggs for the best career batting average as both hit .408 during their careers as Bulldogs.
For his career, Grinstead finished with 20 home runs, 46 doubles, 10 triples, 169 RBIs, 227 runs scored
and 111 stolen bases.
Ehringer, who manned right field for Union, posted a career-best .415 batting average this season as he led the team in home runs (11), RBIs (64) and slugging percentage (.671). In addition, he racked up 14 doubles, one triple, 55 runs scored and 11 stolen bases.
The four-year starter became the program's all-time home run leader with a two-run blast against Auburn University (Ala.) Montgomery on May 14, finishing with 31 to surpass Jeremy Smith's mark of 30.
In addition to the home run record, the Somerset, Ky. native has amassed a number of other career records. The career marks he owns are games played (240), at bats (785), hits (292), doubles (68), RBIs (232) and total bases (465). Also, he ranks second in runs scored with 228.
The 5-foot-11 right fielder finished with a .372 career average and a .592 career slugging percentage. In addition, he has stolen 57 career bases.
Union finished the season 44-12 overall and 23-4 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, placing second in both the regular-season and conference tournament. The Bulldogs ended 2009 ranked No. 14 and advanced to the 2009 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round.
