BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Kyle Shilling has signed to continue his tennis career with the Union College program where he will be reunited with new Union head coach Daniel Finn.
Shilling comes to Union from Simpson (Iowa) College after competing for the last two seasons under Finn. Shilling, a native of Knoxville, Iowa, owned the ninth best Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubles' record last season at 14-9. He was a part of the Simpson duo that reached the IIAC B-Flight doubles' semifinals in 2009.
"Kyle is going to be a great player here at Union," Finn said. "Although Kyle's singles game is good, he brings a great feel to the doubles' side."
Before going to Simpson, Shilling was a two-time state championship qualifier in doubles with a pair of district championships at Knoxville High School. He added two conference championships as well. Shilling also lettered in baseball, football and cross country at Knoxville.
"He is the type of player that a coach looks for," Finn said of Shilling. "Kyle can very easily be molded into a role player for the squad."
Union finished the 2009 campaign with a 17-1 record after reaching the round of 16 at the NAIA National Championship for the third straight season. The 17 wins to start the season mark a program record for consecutive wins. Union also won the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships.
