BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Former Union College pitcher Marty Popham collected New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week honors earlier this week, the league announced.

Pitching for the Mahoning Valley (Ohio) Scrappers, the Louisville, Ky. native received the award after tossing seven no-hit innings in a 6-1 victory over the Auburn (N.Y.) Doubledays on July 8. Popham also recorded a season-high nine strikeouts while walking one in the win.

On the season, Popham is 2-1 with a 2.57 earned-run average as he has allowed eight earned runs in 28.0 innings pitched. In addition, he has struck out 30 and walked just five. Opponents are batting .221 against Popham this season.

Mahoning Valley is the Class A Short-Season affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.

Popham was drafted by the Indians in the 20th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

In his final season at Union, Popham helped the Bulldogs get to the 2008 NAIA World Series as he led the NAIA in wins with a 17-1 overall record. The right-hander posted a 2.27 earned-run average and set seven single-season records. The marks Popham set were for wins (17), games started (18), complete games (12), shutouts (3), innings pitched (123.0), strikeouts (133) and winning percentage (.944 with a 17-1 record).

In addition to the single-season records, Popham also holds the career marks for shutouts (4) and winning percentage (.852 with a 23-4 record).
