BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College has added Luis Alberto Ambrosio Filho to the swim team starting with the 2009-2010 season.
Filho comes to Union from Santa Barbara d'Oeste, Brazil. He attended Colegio Avanco de Ensino Programado.
The newest Bulldog swimmer is a part of the Esporte Clube Barbarense under the direction of Mario Fransisco Sobrinhio. He also swam for Sport Club Corinthians Paulista for Danilo Lima and Esporte Clube Pinheiros for coach Arilson Soares.
Filho ranked 21st in the 200-meter breaststroke at the Brazil Open Championship in 2008. A year earlier he was a part of three Sao Paulo state championships, 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay. He won the 400 medley relay in his age group at the Brazilian National Championship in 2006. Filho was on the 2005 Sao Paulo All-State team in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly.
While swimming with his current club, Filho trained with teammate Cesar Cielo Filho who went on to win the 50 freestyle at the 2008 Olympic Games. Filho also teamed with current 50 breaststroke world-record holder Felipe Franca with Pinheiros.
"I am extremely happy on having a student-athlete of Luis' caliber joining our swimming program," Union head coach Rafael Forti commented. "He brings in many years of experience in competitive swimming and has been associated to swimming power houses in Brazil for years."
Forti looks for Filho to come in and contribute right away.
"He has a lot of versatility and will be having opportunities in all breaststroke events as well as 200 fly and 400 individual medleys," Forti added.
Union finished the 2009 NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in tenth after a third-place finish at the Appalachian Swimming Conference Championship.
