BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College opened the 2009 season with a 14-0 shutout victory over visiting Tennessee Temple University on the opening day of the Lady Bulldog Soccer Classic Friday. In the victory, a trio of Lady Bulldogs posted hat tricks.

The Lady Bulldogs will face Emmanuel (Ga.) College in the classic's final Saturday. Emmanuel (1-1)defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) University 1-0 in the second contest of the day. Tennessee Temple and Cumberland (0-1) meet at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Marcela Salum (Guatemala City, Guatemala) started the scoring for Union with a goal in the second minute thanks to an assist from Renata Peixoto (Brasilia, Brazil). Salum struck again during the ninth minute and completed the hat trick early in the second half.

Peixoto also added a hat trick and two goals were on free kicks.

Katarina Sprunk (Port Charlotte, Fla.) came off the bench and not only did she score her first collegiate goal, but recorded her first hat trick. Sprunk scored Union's final three goals of the opening half, all in a three-minute span.

Jessica Brandner (Independence, Ky.) scored her first collegiate goal 9:40 into the contest.

In all, eight Lady Bulldogs scored in the match. Besides Brandner, Ashley Hall (Hazard, Ky.), Chelsi Walls (Stanford, Ky.) and Hannah Goins (Corbin, Ky.) all recorded a goal.

Union attempted 34 shots while Tennessee Temple had one shot. Newcomer Patricia Nardy (Sao Paulo, Brazil) played the opening 45 minutes in goal for Union and recorded a save. Brittany Puryear (Somerset, Ky.) helped preserve the shutout during the second half.

Union was able to put 19 players into the match.

Lauren Moore scored the game-winning goal for Emmanuel in the 60th minute against Cumberland. Ashley Crowley stopped both shots she saw to record the shutout.

Lady Bulldog Notes

  • The 14 goals are the most in an opener since Union opened the 2005 season with an 8-1 win over Shorter (Ga.) College.
  • The last time Union scored in double digits and shut out an opponent was Oct. 20, 2007 behind a 15-0 decision over Pikeville (Ky.) College.
