BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College's Jonathan Sutton provided the Bulldogs a 1-0 opening-round victory over Warren Wilson (N.C.) College Friday as part of the 2009 Golden Corral Bulldog Soccer Classic.
Sutton (Portsmouth, England) snuck the ball into the back of the net from the left side during stoppage time in the 91st minute of play. Edwin Hobson (Dayton, Ohio) provided Sutton with the assist.
The Bulldogs (1-0) will play Cumberland (Tenn.) University Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the championship contest. Warren Wilson (0-1) faces Emmanuel (Ga.) College at 1 p.m. Cumberland (0-0-1) and Emmanuel (0-1-1) played 90 scoreless minutes and the match went to penalty kicks. Cumberland advanced after winning the shootout 4-2.
Jonathan Shaw (Merseyside, England) posted his eighth career shutout which moved him up to a tie for third on Union's career list with current head coach Tyler Brock.
The Bulldogs owned the shots advantage 22-2 over the Owls.
Union had an apparent goal in the 47th minute; however, the Bulldogs were offside nullifying the score. Shortly there afterward, Aaron Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio) picked up a red card to force the Bulldogs to play shorthanded for a span in the second half. Warren Wilson's Allen Gaddy picked up a red card with eight minutes left which evened the playing field.
