BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College's duo of Nicolas Ernst and Pierre Vernin won the 2009 Bulldog Bash Men's Double division over the weekend. Ernst also made it to the singles' championship.
Ernst (Rietheim, Germany) and Vernin (Le Coteau, France) defeated Shorter (Ga.) College's Luis Quintero and Grayson Jones 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) in the finals. Ernst and Vernin also beat the Shorter team comprised of Thibault Langeard and Badr Cherradi 7-6 (4) and 6-1 in the semifinals.
On the singles' side, Ernst was defeated 7-5 and 6-3 by Freddy Luciani, from Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College, in the finals. To reach the finals, Ernst beat Quintero 7-5 and 6-3 in the semifinals. In his opening-round match, Ernst bested Shorter's Grayson Jones 6-1 and 6-1.
Vernin made it to the semifinals after a 6-3 and 6-3 win over Langeard, but lost to Luciani 6-0 and 6-0.
Langeard made it through the consolation draw to take that bracket.
Lucas Oliveira (Rio de Janero, Brazil) and Kyle Shilling (Knoxville, Iowa) also participated in the singles' draw.
Union will travel to Georgetown, Ky., for the Wilson-ITA Regionals Sept. 24-26.
