BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College women’s soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit against the visitors from Covenant (Ga.) College on Saturday and suffered a 3-0 loss in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

Union now stands at 2-1 in the conference and 4-3 overall while Covenant is 6-2-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the AAC.

Covenant, the No. 23 team in this week’s NAIA poll, took the lead in the third minute when Desiree Robinson scored off a rebound after Rebecca Sasscer’s shot hit the post.

Union battled with Covenant, but the Lady Scots’ Jenny Carter scored in the 57th minute and teammate Kalie Estrada followed with a goal at the 59 minute mark to extend the lead.

Brittany Puryear (Somerset, Ky.) recorded six saves in goal for the Lady Bulldogs while her counterpart Sarah Williams saved four shots.

“We had our chances today, but we did not capitalize,” Union’s head coach Juliana Filipe said, “I am happy with the way we played for the first 65 minutes today.”

She also noted that Amanda Weber (Ontario, Canada) and Karla Goncalves (Sao Paulo, Brazil) played their best matches while at Union.

Finally, Filipe added she was pleased with the play from the trio of Ashleigh Mensch (Elizabethtown, Ky.) Ashley Hall (Hazard, Ky.) and Jessica Brandner (Simon Kenton, Ky.) in the contest.

The Lady Bulldogs will make a trip to Bryan (Tenn.) College on Wednesday for another AAC match scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
