DAYTON, Tenn. - Union College suffered a 4-1 setback at Bryan (Tenn.) College Wednesday in both team's first Appalachian Athletic Conference contest of the season.
Union moved to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in league play while Bryan went to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the AAC.
Bryan jumped in front when Harry Sherwood booted home a penalty kick in the opening minute. He later added a second penalty-kick goal in the 39th minute.
Union cut the deficit in half thanks to an unassisted goal from Dominic Sheele (Clarksville, Tenn.) in the 40th minute. It was his first collegiate goal and he became the 12th different Bulldog to score this season.
The Lions tacked on a 58th-minute score after Reggie Parks headed in a pass from Tom Hemmings. Hemming added a goal in the late stages of the match. Jacobo Gallardo provided the assist.
Union was called for 21 fouls and the Bulldogs were issued four yellow cards and two red cards. On the other side, Bryan had two yellow cards with only seven fouls. Union entered the match with only seven yellow cards and 37 fouls in the first five contests of 2009.
Bryan had 17 shots while the Bulldogs attempted 10. Four of Union's shots were on goal and Bryan had seven on goal.
Next on the schedule for Union is another AAC contest, this time at home against Milligan (Tenn.) College Saturday at 4 p.m.
- The penalty kicks for Bryan were the first two of the season for a Union opponent and the Bulldogs only faced three penalty shots in 2008.
- The Bulldogs only allowed three goals in the first five matches of 2009.
- The last time Union allowed four goals in a contest was 28 matches ago which was a 4-0 loss against Milligan (Tenn.) College on Oct. 10, 2007.
- The last time Union played at Bryan, in 2007, Bryan won with a similar 4-1 score.
