LEXINGTON, Ky. - Union College opened the 2009-10 bowling season with a 12th-place showing at the Thomas N. Burris Memorial Kentucky Collegiate Classic Sunday.
The Bulldogs tallied a total pin fall of 6,734 to place 12th out of 16 teams.
"We competed as a team very well," said Union coach Matt Mahony. "I thought it was our best overall team effort since we've started the program communicating with each other as well as working together as a team. I'm looking forward to seeing how successful we can be this year."
Morehead State (Ky.) University's Blue Team won the event with a pin fall of 7,933, while Pikeville (Ky.) College's A Team was second at 7,879. Bellarmine (Ky.) University Burgundy was third (7,714) with Morehead Gold (7,644) and Pikeville B (7,552).
Jesse Beal (Dayton, Ohio) paced Union with a five-game score of 906 (181.2 average) to play 19th individually. He also recorded a team-best, single-game score of 214. Jordan Rummel (Savannah, Tenn.) was 47th overall with a 166.2 average, while Chad Ferguson (Louisville, Ky.) averaged a score of 160.0 to come in 55th.
Newcomers Cody Proffitt (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) and Rueben Shanks (Front Royal, Va.) tallied total pin falls of 747 and 633, respectively, to place 64th and 70th.
There were a total of 90 bowlers at the classic.
Union returns to action on Saturday at the Green River Classic in Campbellsville, Ky.
