KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Union College fell eight spots to No. 18 in the third regular-season NAIA Football Top 25 Coaches' Poll, the NAIA announced Monday.
The Bulldogs (2-2 overall, 1-1 Mid-South Conference East) suffered a 21-15 conference loss to host Georgetown (Ky.) College last week. The Tigers entered the poll this week at No. 21.
Union garnered 106 total points, 39 fewer than No. 17 Hastings (Neb.) University and only one more than Eastern Oregon University.
There was not much shuffling around in the NAIA Top 25 Poll. For the sixth straight poll, the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) is recognized in the No. 1 spot. Sioux Falls nabbed 444 total points and 18 of the 19 possible first-place votes. Outscoring its opponent 242-25 this year, Sioux Falls is 4-0 overall and has won a nation-best 18 straight games. The Cougars have now been ranked No. 1 a total of 35 times since the 2000 season including 18 mentions since 2007.
The minor upset that occurred was then-No. 16 McKendree (Ill.) out-lasting then-No. 14 St. Ambrose (Iowa), 17-12. Jumping up two spots, McKendree sits at No.14 this week while St. Ambrose falls to No. 22. Sterling (Kan.) was the only team that fell out of the Top 25, while No. 21 Georgetown (Ky.) placed for the first time in 2009.
At No. 2, Carroll (Mont.) earned the remaining first-place vote and a total of 426 points. For the 109th straight poll, Carroll is ranked in the Top 25, which is the second longest active streak. The Fighting Saints have been in the second spot for the last six straight polls and have been either No. 1 or No. 2 for the last 25 straight rankings. Carroll faces a tough challenge by hosting No. 19 Eastern Oregon on Saturday.
After an impressive 55-14 win over then-No. 7 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) on Saturday, No. 3 Lindenwood (Mo.) holds its spot after finishing with 409 total points. Lindenwood forced six turnovers and held a 35-6 lead at the half. The Lion defense held MidAmerica Nazarene more than 170 yards of offense below its season average of 500 yards.
No. 4 St. Francis (Ind.) stays at the fourth slot with 395 total points. In the College Fanz/NAIA Game of the Week on Saturday, St. Francis took care of Marian (Ind.), 28-7. That victory was the 54th straight home win for St. Francis. The Cougars battle No. 23 Malone (Ohio) on the road this weekend.
After an idle weekend, No. 5 Morningside (Iowa) will get back in action with a home game against Dana (Neb.). Led by running back Jake Peterson, the rushing offense is third in the nation with a 275.0 yard clip.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The next Top 25 Poll will be announced on Monday, Oct. 5.
Union returns to action Saturday when it will play host to West Virginia Tech in MSC East action. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
