BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The dynamic duo of Marcela Salum and Renata Peixoto
teamed up twice to lead host Union College to a 2-1 Appalachian
Athletic Conference victory over Milligan (Tenn.) College Thursday.
The victory improved the Lady Bulldogs to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Lady Buffaloes dropped to 1-4-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the AAC.
Salum (Guatemala City, Guatemala) netted her 13th and 14th goals on the season in the victory, while Peixoto (Brasilia, Brazil) recorded her 13th and 14th assists. Salum now leads the team in points with 31 with Peixoto close behind with 28.
For much of the first half, the teams went back and forth and spent lots of time with the ball in the midfield. But in the 35th minute, Peixoto booted the ball high from about 30 yards out on a free kick, and Salum headed the ball in from six yards to put Union up 1-0.
Salum scored again in the 54th minute off a crossing pass from Peixoto, putting the Lady Bulldogs up 2-0.
Milligan didn't give up and made a run at Union's two-goal cushion. Samantha Barton cut the margin to 2-1 off a crossing pass from Rachel Martin in the 77th minute.
The Lady Buffaloes made several runs in the closing minutes, but Lady Bulldog goalkeeper Patricia Nardy (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was more than up for the task as she made six of her 10 saves in the second half.
Union outshot Milligan 18-16 with the Lady Bulldogs putting 10 shots on goal while the Lady Buffaloes had 11 shots on goal.
