BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College needed eight minutes in overtime and a header from Dominic Sheele for a 1-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory against Milligan (Tenn.) College Thursday.
Sheele (Clarksville, Tenn.) flicked in the ball after Dan Johnson (Lancashire, England) headed it to him thanks to a throw in from Aaron Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the 98th minute. It was only the second goal of Sheele's career. Johnson's assist was also the second of his career and the other came against Milligan last season.
Jonathan Shaw (Merseyside, England.) stopped all five of Milligan's shots on goal. The shutout was the third of the season for the junior and Union's fourth in 2009.
Union had a score called back when Jonathan Sutton (Portsmouth, England) put the ball into the Milligan net, however he was called for a foul halfway through the second half.
The Bulldogs had a total of 24 shots, 11 on goal, in the contest. Milligan could only muster nine shots.
Union improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in AAC play. Milligan, ranked No. 38 in the NAIA Coaches' Poll, slipped to 6-2-1 and 3-1 in the league.
The win was the first over Milligan for Union head coach Tyler Brock since he took over the program in 2003.
Next for the Bulldogs will be a trip to Virginia Intermont College for another AAC contest Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Bulldog Notes
For the second straight season Union and Milligan needed overtime as Milligan won 2-1 in the 2008 meeting.
