
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - A total of three school records were broken Saturday as Union College opened the swim season with a home match against the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.). In addition, 15 national cuts were posted by the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs' 200-yard medley relay team used a time of one minute and 39.28 seconds for the program record and an "A" Cut. The Lady Bulldogs' 200 medley relay team also swam to an "A" cut.
The men's and women's 200 freestyle relays also posted national cut times.
Newcomer Kasey McCormick (Heborn, Ky.) broke Union's 50 and 100 breaststroke records and her 100 time of 1:13.46 was also an "A" time.
Luis Filho (Santa Barbara D'Oeste, Brazil) swam to two national cuts, an "A" time in the 100 breaststroke and a "B" cut time in the 500 freestyle.
Sophomore Molly Fittro (Seaside, Calif.) posted an "A" cut in the 200 freestyle with a "B" cut in the 50 freestyle.
David Johnson (Louisville, Ky.) finished the 50 freestyle with an "A" cut as well and teammate Roberto Bertholo, Jr. (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) also had a "B" cut for the same event.
Tamsin Petersen (Johannesburg, South Africa) obtained a "B" time in the 100 butterfly.
A "B" cut was reached by Kristina Kirk (Versailles, Ky.) in the 100 backstroke.
The University of the Cumberlands won both the men's and women's meets. Union lost on the men's side 74-21 while the Lady Bulldogs suffered a 61-34 setback.
"I am very happy with the way we swam today," Union head coach Rafael Forti commented. "We were technically sound and did not make many mistakes."
Union returns to the pool Saturday at Asbury (Ky.) College for a tri-meet along with Bellarmine (Ky.) University starting at 1 p.m.
