
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College's Zach Winn won the 2009 Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference Division II Rider of the Year award upon completion of the season while Union finished third in the team standings.
Winn, a junior from Port Hope, Canada, earned his third conference rider of the year honor. The previous two years he was the MidWest Collegiate Cycling Conference Rider of the Year.
Over the season, Winn posted 13 Top-5 finishes, including three event wins. He won the cross country race at the SECCC Championship to go with victories in the short track and time trial races at Florida State University.
Union collected 718 points during the season which put the squad third in the team standings. Warren Wilson (N.C.) College took the SECCC Division II championship with 903 points while Brevard (N.C.) College landed in second thanks to 834 points.
Rachel Millsop (Springdale, Ark.) rode to fourth in the women's omnium standings after she scored 1,221 points. She was 14 points away from third.
The men's omnium standings featured a total of four Union riders, including Winn. Brad Nelson (Carmel, Ind.) finished sixth, Greg Gibson (Provo, Utah) was eighth while Wesley Lamberson (Limestone, Tenn.) finished his freshman season tenth.
Union will travel to Truckee, Calif., for this year's USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championship. The championship is scheduled to get underway Friday.
