
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Union College garnered votes in the fifth regular-season NAIA Football Top 25 Coaches' Poll but dropped just outside the Top 25, the NAIA announced Monday.
The Bulldogs suffered a 24-12 loss at No. 6 University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) over the weekend to put them 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-South Conference East.
Union garnered 20 total points to put it 27th overall and 11 points behind No. 25 Georgetown (Ky.) College.
The University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) remains the No. 1 team in the NAIA Top 25 Poll. For the eighth straight poll dating back to the 2008 Postseason Top 25, Sioux Falls is voted as the top team, this time earning 444 total points and 18 first-place votes. Riding a nation-best 20-game winning streak, the Cougars are 6-0 this year. This week, Sioux Falls faces a stiff challenge travelling to the University of North Dakota, a NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision member. Sioux Falls holds a 347-33 scoring advantage this year.
Earning the remaining first-place vote, No. 2 Carroll (Mont.) totaled 426 points. Carroll is tied for the most wins in the country (7) after a 32-0 blanking of Montana State-Northern last Saturday. The Fighting Saints are looking to extend a 20-game home winning streak this weekend with a tilt against Montana Tech.
The next five teams all held their positions and undefeated records. No. 3 Lindenwood (Mo.), No. 4 Saint Francis (Ind.), No. 5 Morningside (Iowa), No. 6 Cumberlands (Ky.) and No. 7 Lambuth (Tenn.) are five of the nine teams that currently boast a spotless record. Besides Lindenwood, the other four schools all defeated top 20 opponents last weekend.
Riding a four-game winning streak, No. 24 Dickinson State (N.D.) vaults into the Top 25 for the first time in four weeks. No. 23 Ohio Dominican also makes the cut having won its last three games - the Panthers were last ranked on Sept. 14 (No. 20). The third team to find itself in the Top 25 after sitting out last week is No. 25 Georgetown (Ky.). The Tigers were ranked 21st two weeks ago and get mentioned this time after a 49-9 win over Kentucky Christian.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The next Top 25 Poll will be announced on Monday, Oct. 19.
Union returns to action Saturday at Pikeville (Ky.) College. The MSC East tilt is set to begin at 6 p.m.
