
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College maintained a lead throughout the contest but had to fend off a hard-charging Tennessee Wesleyan College squad to win 4-2 Monday in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
With the win, Union improved to 9-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play. More importantly, the win guarantees Union it will host a first-round game in the upcoming conference tournament on Nov. 7.
Tennessee Wesleyan dropped to 7-6-1 overall and 2-4 in the AAC following the loss.
"I thought our guys played really well," said Union coach Tyler Brock. "They really hustled and worked their tails off. Really proud of them for getting this win."
Union dominated the first half, reeling off three goals for a 3-0 halftime cushion. Brett Smith (Berea, Ky.) opened the scoring as he knocked in a rebound in the 16th minute.
Dominic Sheele (Clarksville, Tenn.) set up Chris Riley (Cornwall, England) for the second goal of the game in the 27th minute.
Just before the half, Dan Johnson (Lancashire, England) headed in a corner kick from John Sutton (Portsmouth, England) as the Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead into the break.
Tennessee Wesleyan cut the margin to 3-1 when Richard Zuzart scored in the 55th minute. However, Union upped the margin to 4-1 in the 62nd minute when Chris Elliott (Isle of Wight, England) scored from 30 yards out.
Not ready to give up, Tennessee Wesleyan made it a two-goal game again when Mitchell Swanson scored on a 20-yard shot in the 70th minute.
Union returns to action on Oct. 28 when it plays host to King (Tenn.) College at 4 p.m.
