BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College took control of its destiny in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a 3-1 victory over visiting Bryan (Tenn.) College Tuesday.

The Lady Lions took the first set 25-15, but Union took the next three sets 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 for the 3-1 decision.

The win extended the Lady Bulldogs' win streak to 14 matches, upping their overall record to 21-3 and league mark to 13-1.

Bryan dropped to 16-12 overall and 8-1 in the AAC.

Even though Union and Bryan split the season series with each notching a win, Union holds the tiebreaker should each end the regular season with one conference loss. Bryan defeated Union 3-2 on Sept. 22, but since Union on needed four sets to win the rematch, it holds the tiebreaker.

Union looked flat in the first set as Bryan used a 10-3 rally to open up a 23-12 cushion. The Lady Bulldogs tried to battle back, but the Lady Lions took the first set 25-15.

In the second set, Bryan appeared to be in control as it took a 14-9 lead. However, Union scrapped back with 6-1 run to tie the match at 15-15. After taking an 18-16 edge, Union maintained a slight advantage the rest of the way before sealing the 25-21 decision to even the match at a set apiece.

The third set was much like its predecessor with the scoring going back and forth. Union finally used a 5-0 surge to open up a 22-17 lead on its way to a 25-22 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Bryan jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the fourth set, but Union quickly rebounded and used a 7-2 rally to take a 9-5 advantage and never looked back. The Lady Bulldogs led by as much as six points (22-16) in the 25-21 decision, sealing the 3-1 victory.

Junior Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) posted her ninth 30-plus assist outing in a row with 43. She also had seven digs and six kills. Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.) delivered 13 kills, while Amanda Silva (Londrina, Brazil) recorded 20 digs. Meg Donnelly (Middletown, Ohio) helped out with nine digs and three service aces.

For Bryan, Alison Young posted 10 kills, while Jessica Jones helped out with 21 digs. Amanda Manke and Hannah Suits chipped in 18 and 13 assists, respectively.

Union returns to action Thursday when it pays AAC rival Milligan (Tenn.) College a visit. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.

Lady Bulldog Notes

  • Brooke Vinovich became the third player in program history to amass 1,300 career kills. With her 13-kill performance versus Bryan, she now has 1,310 to her credit.
  • While the Lady Bulldogs extended their win streak to 14 matches, they saw their consecutive sweep streak snapped at 11 in a row.
