
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - NCAA Division II King (Tenn.) College used a late surge to pull away in the fifth set to close the 3-2 victory, snapping host Union College's 15-match winning streak Thursday.
The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 22-4 overall, while the Lady Tornado improved to 22-8 on the season.
The Lady Bulldogs won the first set 25-20, but King took the next two sets 25-21 and 25-22. Union rallied for a 30-28 decision in the fourth set; however, King won the fifth set 15-11 for the 3-2 victory.
Union also saw its 20-match, home winning streak come to an end. The Lady Bulldogs are now 13-1 at Robsion Arena this season.
Junior Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) recorded a double-double with 41 assists and 26 digs, while Amanda Silva (Londrina, Brazil) added 21 digs. Maggie Peterson (Soda Springs, Idaho) and Meg Donnelly (Middletown, Ohio) helped out with 14 and 11 digs, respectively, and Chelsea Kirschman (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) led the team with 11 kills.
Down 2-1, the Lady Bulldogs appeared to have things under control in the fourth set with a 24-22 lead. However, King rallied for three consecutive points to grab a 25-24 edge. The teams then went back and fourth, and King led 28-27 when Union reeled off three-straight points for the 30-28 to force a fifth and deciding set.
The back-and-forth play continued in the fifth set before King opened up a 9-6 lead. After the Lady Bulldogs cut the margin to two, the Lady Tornado used a 5-1 run to break open a 14-8 cushion. Union rallied to pull within three, but King finished off the match with a 15-11 decision for the 3-2 victory.
For King, Morgan Machen and Sarah Van Goethern led the way with 13 kills, while Rachel Harding posted 37 digs.
Up next for Union is a trip to Montreat (N.C.) College for an Appalachian Athletic Conference match Saturday at 1 p.m.
