BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College and Reinhardt (Ga.) College when toe-to-toe in a crucial Appalachian Athletic Conference game Saturday with the teams dueling to a 1-1, double-overtime tie.
The tie puts Union at 9-4-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the AAC, while Reinhardt is 6-8-1 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play.
With the draw, Union will enter the upcoming conference tournament as the No. 3 seed and will play host to No. 6 Tennessee Wesleyan College Nov. 7. Time to be determined.
"I'm really proud of effort by the team," said Union coach Tyler Brock. "It was a collective team effort, and we put ourselves in a situation to control our own destiny. Although it wasn't a win, we accomplished one of our goals, which was to host a first-round game in the conference tournament."
Reinhardt will be the No. 5 seed and travel to No. 4 Montreat (N.C.) College for its opening round game.
After a scoreless first half, Dominic Scheele (Clarksville, Tenn.) got the Bulldogs on the board as he collected a loose ball goalkeeper Zack Schultze could not collect and deposited it in the net for a 1-0 advantage in the 74th minute.
However, Reinhardt was awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute and Spencer Davidson drilled it home to even the score at 1-1.
As the game headed into overtime, both teams struggled to see as darkness was settling in. Still, each team had some quality scoring chances. Schultze came up with a big save on a shot by Scheele in the second overtime period, while Union's Jonathan Shaw (Merseyside, England) came up with two clutch saves during the extra periods.
Shaw finished the game with eight saves, while Schultze had four. Reinhardt outshot Union 15-14 and had nine shots on goal as compared to Union five.
Union will close out the regular season Tuesday when it plays host to Covenant (Ga.) College at 4 p.m.
