BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College cruised to a 3-0 sweep over visiting Bluefield (Va.) College Thursday en route to capturing the 2009 Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season championship.
Still, the Lady Bulldogs are not satisfied with the regular-season crown.
"As much as we are excited about winning the regular-season championship, we still have some work to do," said Union coach Whitney Elam. "Our goal and focus is on winning the conference tournament."
The conference title is Union's second in the last three years. The Lady Bulldogs collected the 2007 AAC regular-season championship.
Union (25-4 overall, 15-1 AAC) will enter the league tournament as the No. 1 seed. The tournament will be held in Kingsport, Tenn., on Nov. 10-12.
The Lady Bulldogs had little problem in dispatching the Lady Rams, winning 25-11, 25-12, 25-8. In all three sets, Union opened things up with a 6-1 lead.
Bluefield cut the margin to four (12-8) in the first set, but Union used a 7-1 run to open up a 19-9 margin before securing the 25-11 decision.
In the second set, Union raced to a comfortable 22-8 lead, but Bluefield prolonged the set by scoring four of the final seven points. Still, the Lady Bulldogs took the set by the count of 25-12.
After starting the third set 6-1, Union accounted for 16 of the next 20 points in building a 22-5 advantage on its way to the 25-8 outcome.
The Bulldogs posted a .340 hitting percentage and recorded 20 total blocks in the win. Senior Meg Donnelly (Middletown, Ohio) led the team with eight kills to go along with seven digs. Amelia Cantrell (Georgetown, Ky.) chipped in six kills and a five total blocks. Senior Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.) also had five blocks as will as five kills.
Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) had 32 assists and 13 digs for her fifth double-double in a row. Amanda Silva (Londrina, Brazil) led the team with 16 digs.
For seniors Donnelly, Vinovich, Autumn Combs (Florence, Ky.), Sarah Alderson (Birmingham, Ala.) and Christina Prindle (Florence, Ky.), this was their final match at Robsion Arena.
"This is one of the most talented group of seniors we've had here at Union," said Elam. "And we're counting on their leadership to help us continue on through the conference tournament, and hopefully, on to the NAIA National Championship Tournament."
