CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Host Campbellsville (Ky.) University reeled off 21 fourth-quarter points to overcome a 17-point deficit and defeat Union College 31-29 Saturday in Mid-South Conference East action.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the MSC East, while Campbellsville improved to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Union led 13-3 at the half and took a 20-3 advantage early in the third quarter when William Roundtree (Ocala, Fla.) intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards for a score.

Calvin Mann cut the margin to 20-10 when he hauled in a 56-yard touchdown pass with 11:27 to go in the third. However, Chad Boyington (Stockbridge, Ga.) booted a 26-yard field goal with 3:57 left in the quarter to put the Bulldogs up 23-10.

In the fourth quarter, everything changed.

Campbellsville scored three touchdowns in a row to grab a 31-23 lead. David Mason capped a nine-play, 99-yard drive with a 3-yard run to pull the Tigers within 23-17 with 14:11 to play. Then, Josh Madding hauled in a 24-yard scoring pass to give Campbellsville its first lead of the game at 24-23 with 11:26 on the clock. The Tigers stretched the margin to 31-23 with 6:29 to play when Harold Small pulled down a 52-yard pass from Nathan Cooper.

The Bulldogs had a chance to tie the game when Demetrius Hicks (Frankfort, Ky.) caught a 2-yard touchdown pass with 1:08 to play. However, the two-point conversion was no good as Campbellsville hauled on for the 31-29 decision.

Union struggled offensively as Campbellsville outgained the Bulldogs 492-229 despite the fact Union held the ball for 31 minutes, 56 seconds.

The Bulldog defense accounted for the team's first two touchdowns as Josh Littleton (Waverly Hall, Ga.) recovered a fumble and returned it 55 yards to make it 7-0 in the first quarter. Roundtree added the interception return for a score in the third quarter.

Also, Boyington's first field goal was set up by a Tiger fumble.

In all, Union forced four Campbellsville turnovers, scoring 17 points off the miscues. The Bulldogs were mistake free turnover-wise, but were forced to punt eight times. Additionally, while Union scored on all four of its red-zone chances, three of the scores were field goals.

Mike Brinkley (Anthony, Fla.) completed only 14-of-33 passes for 147 yards and a score. Rob Brown (Daytona, Fla.) led the ground game with 46 yards on 13 carries.

Defensively, Roundtree and Khambrel Simpkins (Lauderhill, Fla.) led Union with nine total tackles apiece.

For Campbellsville, Cooper completed 21-of-31 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns. Madding caught six passes for 69 yards and a score, while Mann hauled in four passes for 136 yards and a touchdown.

Union will close out the regular season Saturday at Belhaven (Miss.) College. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. Eastern.

Bulldog Notes
  • Chad Boyington tied the school record with three field goals made in a game. He is the fifth different player to accomplish the feat, and this is the eighth time a player made three in a contest.
  • Union has a plus-12 turnover ratio with 26 takeaways to 14 giveaways this season.
  • Campbellsville now leads the season 13-10.
