WILMORE, Ky. - Despite double-doubles from Brooke Smith and Ashley Lunsford, Union College came up short as it fell 88-86 in overtime to host Asbury (Ky.) College Tuesday.
The loss dropped Union to 1-2 overall, while Asbury improved to 2-2 on the year.
Smith (Pineville, Ky.) netted a season-high 29 points and 16 rebounds, matching her career high. Lunsford (Orlando, Ky.) followed with a 17-point, 12-rebound performance. The double-doubles were the second for both Smith and Lunsford.
Tied at 81-81 at the end of regulation, both teams struggled to keep the offense going in overtime as no one scored for the first 3:40 in the extended period. After each traded a pair of free throws, Dorian Downs scored to put the Lady Eagles up 85-83 with 36 seconds left. Laura Carroll connected on two free throws to up the margin to 87-83 with 25 seconds to play.
Lunsford then made the first of two free throws to make it 87-84 at the 15-second mark. Union got the rebound, and Carley Blankenship (Lexington, Ky.) scored to make it 87-86 with five seconds still to go.
However, Carroll hit 1-of-2 free throws in the closing seconds to seal the 88-86 win for Asbury.
Poor free-throw shooting did Union in. The Lady Bulldogs made 22 free throws, which was more than the Lady Eagles attempted. Yet, Union shot 59.5 percent (22-of-37 free throws) from the foul line. Meanwhile, Asbury hit 19-of-21 (90.5 percent) at the charity stripe.
In addition to Smith and Lunsford, Blankenship and Courtney Thomas (Glasgow, Ky.) hit double figures with 17 and 10 points, respectively.
Courtney Albin paced Asbury with 25 points, while Laken Griffith posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Also scoring in double digits were Carroll with 11 and Chelsea Williams with 10.
Union will next play Friday and Saturday in the Tennessee Wesleyan College Classic. The Lady Bulldogs will face Emmanuel (Ga.) College Friday at 8 p.m.
