BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College Director of Athletics Darin S. Wilson announced Thursday Sean Gillespie as the Bulldogs full-time head men's basketball coach.
Gillespie took over the program as the interim head coach in July when Kelly Combs resigned from the post.
"I am pleased to announce Sean Gillespie as the head coach of our men's basketball program," said Wilson. "Sean has handled the transition period extremely well and he brings significant basketball experience to the program. We welcome Sean and his family to the athletic department and to our basketball program."
Under Gillespie, the Bulldogs are off to a 5-6 start overall and own a 3-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference record. Union has also received votes in the NAIA Division II Coaches' Poll.
"I am really appreciative of this opportunity and the support Mr. Wilson and Union College has given my staff and I," said Gillespie. "We believe we are heading in the right direction, and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish the rest of this season and in the years to come."
Prior to coming to Union, Gillespie spent the past three seasons as the assistant men's basketball coach at Sterling (Kan.) College. The Warriors improved every season while Gillespie was with the program. In 2006-07, Sterling posted an 12-17 overall record before posting a 16-12 mark in 2007-08. The Warriors took a giant leap in 2008-09, going 21-10, winning the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship and advancing to the NAIA Division II National Championship Tournament.
Union returns to action Saturday when it pays Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) University a visit. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
