BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Senior Carley Blankenship netted 19 points as she joined the 1,000-Point Club, but it was not enough as Union College fell 72-69 to visiting Pikeville (Ky.) College Tuesday.
The loss dropped Union to 9-4 overall, while Pikeville improved to 8-3 on the year.
Down eight with 6:56 to play, Blankenship (Lexington, Ky.) capped a 12-4 run with a 3-pointer to pull Union even at 66-66 with 2:51 to play.
Natiera Hinton and Brooke Smith (Pineville, Ky.) traded old-fashioned, three-point plays to make it a 69-69 contest with 2:04 left. Lakia Bailey hit a pair of free throws to lift Pikeville to a 71-69 advantage at the 1:14 mark.
The Lady Bears looked to have sealed the win when Meagan Mosley hit a layup with 22 seconds remaining; however, she was called for charging to leave it a two-point game.
After a missed shot by Blankenship, Hinton got the rebound and was fouled with 5.6 seconds to go. She made the first of two free throws to make it 72-69. Smith grabbed the rebound and got it to Blankenship, who got off a running 3-point attempt as time expired, but the shot rimmed out as the Lady Bears escaped with the win.
Blankenship finished with 19 points to give her 1,007 career points, ranking her 13th in program history. She also dished out a season-high nine assists. Smith recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 24 points and 12 rebounds while blocking a season-high five shots.
