BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College men’s soccer team used three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 win over visiting Spalding (Ky.) University on Thursday. The win snaps a three-match losing streak and is Union’s fifth shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-5-1 with the victory while Spalding falls to 3-8-1.

Union used a quick-strike offense against Spalding to gain the early advantage. Patrick Bueno (Greer, S.C.) played a cross to Tyler Stallons (Hopkinsville, Ky.) and he was able to score to put Union in front only two minutes into the match.

It took Union 33 minutes to score again, but Dustin Isom (Hopkinsville, Ky.) took a through ball from Marc Pierre (Haiti) for his first goal of the year.

Before the half ended, at the 44th minute, Isom booted a free kick and Arthur Ace blocked the ball, but he was unable to control it which allowed Danny Bartlett (Edgewood, Ky.) to put the loose ball into the back of the net.

Three Bulldogs combined for the shutout, with Jonathan Shaw (Merseyside, England) in goal for the first half. Senior Eric Ashcraft (Corinth, Ky.) recorded two saves over 33 minutes in the second half and Max Sisson (Corbin, Ky.) preserved the shutout over the final 12 minutes. Ace stopped three shots in goal for Spalding.

Union held the advantage in shots, with 15 and six were on goal compared to Spalding’s seven shots.

Next for the Bulldogs is an Appalachian Athletic Conference contest against Milligan (Tenn.) College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. on Burch-Nau Field.
