BARBOURVILLE, Ky.- Union College handled business on Senior Night against visiting Montreat College in Appalachian Athletic Conference play, 97-60.
With the win the Bulldogs improve their record to 17-12 (10-5) while the Cavaliers fall to 3-25 (1-14) in the 2009-10 campaign.
Union dominated the Cavaliers in every facet of the ball game the entire evening. The Bulldogs forced Montreat into 10 turnovers in each half, converting their 20 miscues into 23 Bulldog points. The Bulldogs shot the lights out, going 37-of-62 (59.7 percent) while the Cavaliers only converted on 22-of-61 (36.1 percent) from the field. Union out-rebounded the Cavaliers 44 to 37 and the Bulldogs tallied 27 assists compared to only 11 from Montreat.
Montreat seemed to have found an answer down low through the solid early play of Christina Tonkins and forward Matt Rushing, combining for 14 first half points, but as the Cavaliers pushed, Union never looked back. The Bulldogs added a late field goal from Sophomore Payton Ponzer (Independence, Ky.) at the first half buzzer to take a 22 point lead into the locker room, 54-32.
The Bulldog lead never got lower than 19 points in the second half, thanks in part to Montreats struggles offensively, going 10-for-32 (31.3 percent) from the field in the half and 9-for 24 (37.5 percent) from the free throw line throughout the entire game.
Union was led in scoring in the contest by Senior Kearney Demus (Lexington, Ky.) who netted 16 first half points. Demus finished the evening with 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting and a season high eight assists. Demus did the majority of his scoring damage from the free throw line, converting on 8-of-11 (72.7 percent).
The Bulldogs also received solid contributions from Junior Ihsan Phillips (Philadelphia, Pa.), who notched a double-double with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting (63.6 percent) and 11 rebounds, Payton Ponzer, who netted 14 points on the evening and Junior Josh Hurd (Independence, Ky.) who chipped in 12 points in the conference tilt.
Senior Beau Brown (Athens, Tenn.) had a solid evening on Senior Night, tallying 10 and hauling in five boards to go along with his three steals for the Bulldogs. Senior Clinton Dixon (Irvine, Ky.) also stepped up on Senior Night, amassing nine points and seven rebounds.
The Cavaliers were led in scoring on the evening by Vincent Dembrowski, netting 13 points for Montreat. Matt Rushing also had a solid performance, finishing the evening with 12 points for the Cavaliers.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday as the travel to Waleski, Ga. for a conference battle with Reinhardt College. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
