CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The 2010 season got off to a rocky start for No. 16 Union as host No. 5 Lee recorded a 10-0 and 10-3 doubleheader sweep Wednesday.
The Flames improved to 7-1 overall, while the Bulldogs are 0-2.
Union returns to action Saturday and Sunday when it hosts Ohio Dominican for a three-game set. Saturday's doubleheader to begin at 12 p.m.
In the first game, there weren't any highlights for Union as Lee left-hander Matthew Gilson hurled a five-inning, perfect game in the 10-0 decision.
Gilson struck out six and needed only 57 pitches to correct his second win of the season.
It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the third when Lee broke through for five runs. The Flames sealed the win with a five-run fifth, which included a pair of home runs - a two-run shot by Tanner Moore and a Michael Brown solo home run.
In the second game, Union drew first blood but couldn't keep pace as Lee won 11-3.
Brian Mouton (Oakland, Calif.) led off with a walk before stealing second. Two batters later, Brandon Hedrick (Corbin, Ky.) lined a one-out single to drive Mouton in for a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived with the Flames scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Lee went on to tack on two in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth for a 10-1 advantage.
Union began to rally in the sixth, cutting the margin to 10-3 after a Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) two-run double with no outs. Union loaded the bases with one out but were unable to score any more runs as the next two batters struck out looking and flew out to right.
Lee added an unearned run in bottom of the sixth, making the final 11-3.
Hedrick led Union offensively in going 2-for-4 with a RBI, while Brake went 1-of-1 with two RBIs. Michael Adams (Tega Kay, S.C.) had Union's only other base hit.
