BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Brandon Hedrick tied the program record for most strikeouts in a game with 12 as No. 16 Union swept a doubleheader from visiting Ohio Dominican 7-5 and 13-3 Saturday.
Hedrick (Corbin, Ky.) fanned 12 batters in 7 2/3 innings of work, equaling Jeff Henderson's mark which was set on April 26, 2003, in a win over Milligan (Tenn.). Hedrick allowed five runs on five hits and two walks but got a no-decision.
Koby Hearn (Paris, Ky.) pitched the final 1 1/3 for Union, only surrendering two hits in facing six batters as Union won 7-5 in the opener.
With the wins, Union improves to 2-2 overall, while Ohio Dominican is off to an 0-2 start.
The Bulldogs had to continually battle back in the first game but eventually rallied to win 7-5.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of thie first, Union grabbed a 2-1 lead thanks to a Troy Sitton (Cobden, Ill.) two-run single. Ohio Dominican tied the game with a run in the second, and it remained 2-2 until the sixth when both squads added a run apiece.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brian Mouton (Oakland, Calif.) delivered a run-scoring single while a Michael Adams (Tega Kay, S.C.) added a sac fly to score pinch-runner Ben Hartley (Lexington, Ky.) to put Union up 5-3.
The Bulldogs couldn't hold the lead as the Panthers rallied for two runs in the top of the eighth to even the score at 5-5.
Yet, Union had one more answer. Tyler Martin (Corbin, Ky.) lined a RBI double and later scored an insurance run when Ryan Satterlee (Youngstown, Ohio) grounded out to second to make the final 7-5.
Sitton led the Bulldogs offensively in going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Mouton went 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored, and Adams and Martin each collected two hits and a RBI.
For Ohio Dominican, Evan Shaw batted 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored.
In the second game, Union fell behind early once agian, but a pair of big innings propelled the Bulldogs to the 13-3, five-inning victory.
Ohio Dominican scored a run in each the first and second innings for a 2-0 edge. However, Union put up a four spot in the bottom fo the second to take the lead for good. After a Martin run-scoring single cut the margin to 2-1, Demetrius Davis (Marietta, Ga.) lined a two-run triple and then scored on the play thanks to a throwing error to put the Bulldogs up 4-2.
The Panthers made it a 4-3 contest in the top of third thanks to a John Lydic RBI single. Yet, the Bulldogs countered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Davis roped a run-scoring double, and Satterlee knocked in a run to up the margin to 6-3.
Union sealed the win with a seven-run fifth. Jonathan Riddle (Eighty Eight, Ky.) lined a two-run single during the rally, and Sitton ended the game when he reached on an error which allowed the final two runs to come across to make the final 13-3.
Davis led Union at the plate in going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBIs. Sitton also went 2-of-3 with a run scored, while Riddle finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Martin also went 2-of-3 with two runs scored and a RBI.
Jacob Scalf (Barbourville, Ky.) collected the win in going 4 2/3 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Hearn pitched a third of an inning, facing only one batter.
Lydic led the Panthers with a 2-for-2, two-RBI performance. Shaw went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The two squads will play a nine-inning affair Sunday at 1 p.m. to complete the three-game series.
